31 Days of Horror Day 26: "Watch your mouth kid if you like this job!"

Title of Movie: Return of the Living Dead
Actors: Clu Gulager, James Karen, Don Calfa, Thom Mathews, Beverly Randolph, John Philbin, Jewel Shepard, Miguel A. Núñez Jr., Brian Peck, Linnea Quigley, Mark Venturini, Jonathan Terry

Quotable Line: "Send....more....paramedics..."

Director: Dan O'Bannon

Released: 1985

The Skinny: When a bumbling pair of employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to re-animate as they go on a rampage through Louisville, Kentucky seeking their favorite food, brains.

The Good: Taking a unique spin on the zombie thing, Return of the Living Dead introduces and explains the concept of why zombies want to eat brains and it makes sense once you hear it coming from a zombie.  I will refrain from spoiling the reason because it is a pretty great explanation. The humor is very funny throughout.  This is easily one of the most tongue in cheek zombie movies ever made (at least until part 2 came out).

The acting is fine, and Scream Queen Linnea Quigley has a nude dance scene that can be simply described as epic. The zombie effects are pretty damn good for not being CG.  One in particular, known as the "Tar-Man" is especially impressive.  Return of the living dead takes the concept of the traditional zombies that were created by George Romero and gives them their own unique spin on things.  Definitely recommended if you have never seen it!

The Bad:  While some of the acting is fine, some of the acting is incredibly over the top but that is not surprising given the overall tone of the flick.   That said, there is precious little that I can say again this movie that wouldn't be nitpicking.

The Ugly: Trash lives out her greatest fear.

My final verdict: 4 zombie torsos wiggling their spinal cord out of 5.
