31 Days of Horror Day 24: "All right, this property... is hereby... condemned."

Title of Movie: Tales From the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight

Actors: William Sadler, Billy Zane, Jada Pinkett Smith, Thomas Haden Church, CCH Pounder, Charles Fleischer, Dick Miller, Brenda Bakke, Sherrie Rose, and John Kassir as the voice of The Crypt Keeper

Quotable Line: "Humans. You're not worth the flesh you're printed on!"

Director: Ernest Dickerson

Released: 1995

The Skinny: Brayker is a man who carries the last of seven keys, special containers which held the blood of Christ and were scattered across the universe to prevent the forces of evil from taking over. If The Collector gets the last key, the universe will fall into Chaos, and he has been tracking Brayker all the way to a small inn in a nowhere town. And now the final battle for the universe begins......

The Good: The performances are the thing to watch in this movie.  That is not to say the creature effects are bad, no.  But the performances are a lot of fun here.  Billy Zane in particular is hysterically funny and at the same time menacing as The Collector.  He is clearly having a blast doing the movie and it shows.  He steals every single scene he is in.  William Sadler as Brayker is excellent as well.  As is Jada Pinkett-Smith as the unlikely heroine of the piece.

The creature effects are nasty, gory, and just plain gross.  This is definitely a good thing!  The demons are creepy and add to the overall mood of the piece. The humor is incredibly tongue in cheek and very, very funny.  The final fight between the Collector and the lead hero is pretty cool.  As is the final demise of the Collector.

The Bad: The end of the movie leaves it open for a sequel.  What we got instead of a direct sequel, was the horrendous Bordello of Blood.  I would have loved for a direct sequel.  Especially because according to the story, there are seven keys that are up for control in the battle against evil.

The Ugly: The demons when they are being birthed up from the ground.

My final verdict: 4 out of 5 keys filled with blood.
