31 Days of Horror Day 22: "Thrill Me"

Title of Movie: Night of the Creeps
Actors: Jason Lively, Steve Marshall, Jill Whitlow, Tom Atkins, Allan Kayser, and Wally Taylor
Quotable Line: "I got good news and bad news, girls. The good news is your dates are here."  "What's the bad news?" "They're Dead."

Director: Fred Dekker

Released: 1986

The Skinny: In 1959, an alien experiment crashes to earth and infects a fraternity member. They freeze the body, but in the modern day, two geeks pledging a fraternity accidentally thaw the corpse, which proceeds to infect the campus with parasites that transform their hosts into killer zombies.
The Good:  I really love this movie!  Fred Dekker has only done three movies and two of them are on this list for a reason.  They are fun, scary movies and this one being his first made him a force to be reckoned with.  Having said that, Night of the Creeps is one of my earliest horror movies that I watched with my mom when I was a kid becasue she was into re-creating make up from some movies.  This one freaked me out when I saw it the first time.  I recently picked it up and it still continues to freak me out.

I think the main reason why I like this one so much is one actor.  Tom Atkins who is no stranger to the genre as he was in several movies done by John Carpenter.  Atkins brings it in this movie where he plays a wisecracking cop and he is utterly hysterically funny in this movie.  Also the fact that this is one of the rare occurrences in a movie where no one is safe.  This is one of those movies that has the audacity to kill off one of the lead characters midway through the proceedings after you have gotten to know and love this character.

The gore and the kills are spectacular in the flick as well.  There are some really fun zombie and alien slug effects throughout and Dekker does not skimp on the gore.  All in all a really freaky, fun flick.

The Bad: The alternate ending shown in the Blu Ray version was so impressive that it actually was better than the theatrical ending.  Makes me wish that they had gone with that ending instead.

The Ugly: How the alien slugs get into you...

My final verdict: 5 cannisters with evil slugs out of 5.
