31 Days of Horror Day 21: Now I'm in the mood for a twinkie!

Title of Movie: Zombieland

Actors:Woody Harrelson, Abigail Breslin, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg

Quotable Line: "Time ta nut up or shut up!"

Director: Ruben Fleischer

The Skinny: Zombieland focuses on two men who have found a way to survive a world overrun by zombies. Columbus is a big wuss -- but when you're afraid of being eaten by zombies, fear can keep you alive. Tallahassee is an AK-toting, zombie-slaying' bad ass whose single determination is to get the last Twinkie on earth. As they join forces with Wichita and Little Rock, who have also found unique ways to survive the zombie mayhem, they will have to determine which is worse: relying on each other or succumbing to the zombies.

The Good: Zombieland is one of those movies that I can honestly say I went in with low expectations and was greatly amused by the proceedings. The reason being is that I hate movies when zombies run. Zombies are essentially dead people with no way of running. What makes zombies scary is that they shamble and move slowly. Alone, if you know how to deal with them one on one they are not that bad. It's the great numbers that zombies can be a deadly issue.

Anyway, Zombieland falls under the category of the running zombie movie. The same category as such films like the remake of Dawn of the Dead, Return of the Living Dead, and Return of the Living Dead part 2. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just that I prefer the shambling slow zombie. Something about those that scares me more. That said, I really enjoyed the idea that the zombie apocalypse has happened and there but a few scant survivors and the survivors just keep on the move for the most part.

The cast is great. Woody Harrelson is awesome as Tallahassee. He play a total badass with a weak spot for twinkies. Jesse Eisenberg is essentially channeling Michael Cera but he does a fine job with the role he has, and his rules on how to survive as well as the frequent implementation of the rules is quite amusing. Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin are both brilliant as well.  I think it is safe to count me among the ranks of men who have a crush on Emma Stone.

Otherwise, the zombie kills in this movie are nothing short of spectacular. We have death by banjo, roller coaster, tower drop ride and honestly; what other movie can you say exists where a zombie gets offed by a falling piano, Looney Tunes style? The humor is quite good and when Bill Murray makes his appearance, I can guarantee the movie just takes a turn that is unexpectedly hysterically funny. Highly recommended.

The Bad: Not enough zombies. I want teeming hordes of zombies! The focus was more on the survivors and less on the zombies. Not a bad thing but for a movie called Zombieland, I want more than what was shown but I'm just nitpicking at this point. Also, the inevitable comparison with Shaun of the Dead. Honestly, there is no comparison. Shaun is the better film in the snese that it is a loving tribute to the Romero films but this one is just plain fun.

The Ugly: Tallahassee not getting his twinkie. Oh, and that zombie clown.

My final verdict: 5 twinkies out of 5.

Um, Rick, he got the Twinkie. At the very end.
