31 Days of Horror Day 10: If you have a taste for terror, You have a date with Carrie!

Title of Movie: Carrie

Actors: Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Betty Buckley, Amy Irving, William Katt, Nancy Allen, John Travolta

Quotable Line: "They're all gonna laugh at you!"

Director: Brian Depalma

Released: 1976

The Skinny: The story of Carrie White, a girl brought up, almost in isolation, by her psychotically religious mother Margaret. After an embarrassing incident in the showers causes her fellow pupils to tease Carrie ruthlessly, her teacher Miss Desjardin disciplines them severely. Determined to have revenge, the other students hatch a plot against Carrie, which turns horribly wrong when Carrie's strange mental powers are unleashed during the school prom.

The Good: The acting is stellar from all of the cast. Piper Laurie is absolutely insane as Carrie's mom and she steals every scene she is in. Sissy Spacek is incredible as Carrie. Especially when she finally snaps. The look of abject terror and anger in her eyes is frightening beyond all comprehansion. Nancy Allen as the rival girl is wonderful and I just loved her. Depalma's directing is top notch. Especially the sequence of the prom leading up to the pig blood falling on her, the almost use of no sound with just the chilling score by Pino Donaggio just heightens the tension of the scene even more so. Suddenly, we go to split screen and the scene begins to kick ass all the more. The prom and the jump scare finale are just the absolute best selling points of this movie. It doesn't matter if you have seen the movie one time or one hundred times, that jump scare still leaves you on your rear.

The Bad: A sequel called Carrie 2: The Rage was made. It was so bad that Stephen King himself requested that no more sequels based on Carrie should ever be made.  It gets worse.  This movie did NOT age well.  Sure, the opening is about three to five minutes of naked women pretending to be high school girls cavorting in the shower after P.E. but this movie is a complete product of its time.  The line "They're all gonna laugh at you" was used in an Adam Sandler comedy album and when I finally got around to seeing this movie, I nearly peed myself laughing because I had heard the sketch so many times.

The Ugly: You dropped a bucket of blood on Carrie and you expect her to not be pissed about it? Yeah...

My final verdict: 4 buckets of blood out of 5
