After Superman collectibles went live on MattyCollector last week I discovered just how much else they have to offer by way of new exclusives. My original plans for this week’s installment are being shelved until next week to bring you a look at what else can be had from Mattel’s website.

Master’s of the Universe is a toy line that has experienced an ongoing love/hate relationship with Mattel. When the initial run went by the wayside a great many years after it began, Mattel tried to restart the franchise with the smaller scale He-Man line. When that fizzled the denizens of Eternia disappeared for quite some time. Perhaps seeing the success of the reintroduction of nostalgic toys from other companies they brought Masters of the Universe back to stores in a newly updated incarnation with a contemporary take on the characters. But this did not last as long as fans and collectors had hoped and again the line disappeared. But like a Phoenix it rose yet again from its ashes and continues to go strong to this day, even crossing over at times with the DC Universe line! All of that said, I should point out the new offerings from MattyCollector for those who have never lost their love of Masters of the Universe.

Moss Man ($20)
A MOTU classic character, the original Moss Man was simply a green version of Beast Man covered in green frocking material. While Mattel has previously released a contemporary Moss Man figure, I believe this one is different by virtue of the ears not being frocked. And like its predecessor, the figure comes with two different heads.

On a non-sequeter aside, I just had this great thought!  A classic battle if you will.  Moss Man vs. Boss Moss of the Freakies!  If you do not know of Boss Moss and the Freakies you obviously did not choke down the Cap'n Crunch-style sugary breakfast cereal in the 70's that gave us the aforementioned character and other colorful creatures like Snorkledorf.  And my joke is wasted on you, too.  If you want to have some idea of what it was like back then to be tempted by slick advertizing for crappy cereal, look no further.
Cy-Clone
If one thing defines the Masters of the Universe line it is campy character names!  And Cy-Clone certainly lives up to that fine tradition.  I suspect the original version had a rotating lower body so he could get all tornado on his enemies.  As nearly as I can determine this figure lacks that particular "action feature" but is a great rethinking of the character for a contemporary audience.  Note: As I write this I have discovered that, sadly, Cy-Clone is SOLD OUT at Matty Collector (hence the lack of a picture).

Panthor (also, sadly, SOLD OUT at press time)
Sometimes cartoon rivals are like siblings. If one has something the other wants one too. That is the impression I got when Panthor was first introduced as Skeletor’s corollary to Battle Cat. But let me tell you, this is not your father’s Panthor! While the original big cats of Eternia were immoveable plastic tigers repurposed to bear their masters on their backs, this version has a whole lot of cool going for it. From the multiple points of articulation to the incredible saddle and battle helmet. This is not just a purple version of He-Man’s constant companion by a long shot! I do kind of miss the purple frocking of the original, but it would not really work given the nature of the sculpted fur.

Weapons Rack ($12)
Invoking an accessory of the original Castle Grayskull, this standing rack of weapons features a variety of swords and pole arms to outfit your Eternians for battle. While this would seem to be the kind of special accessory that would not warrant any packaging beyond the most plain of boxes, they actually put it on a full color Masters of the Universe blister card!  Note:  This particular offering is flagged as NEARLY GONE on the website and may be sold out by the time this goes live.  That is always the trouble with exclusives like this.

Castle Grayskull Display Stands
Display our Masters of the Universe figures in grand style with these painted display stands that invoke the cobblestones of the famed home of the Eternian Royal Family.  It is unclear on the website exactly how many of these stands come in the set, but given the $12.00 price tag there is probably more than just one.  Other display stand offerings in the past for DC Universe Classics had 25 stands, but as these are a bit more involved I would suspect something like a dozen.

For Rick we have an exclusive offering from the Cars line.  It's Barry Diesel (any relation to Vin Diesel?), a sizeable RV outfitted with the Cars' version of a beer cap.  This guy will set you back an equally sizeable $25.00!

He seems to be happily indulging his fondness for crude oil right out of the barrel, showing that even Disney characters are not immune to a little harmless vice.  So if you like Cars, especially those getting sauced at a sporting event, this is the exclusive for you!  Eagle-eyed readers who check out this offering may notice another, rather unique Cars exclusive to be available later this year that I will cover in a later edition of this feature.
For Andrew there is the Sinestro Corps costume sporting version of none other than that Corps’ namesake – Sinestro! While the pink menace is available in his traditional blue and black costume, this variant will only be available on Mattel’s website. This is a great example of Mattel’s commitment to their exclusives as Sinestro comes on exactly the same kind of retro Mego-style card as the other figures in the line.  A real bargain at $20.00.

Tell you what, instead of going into the DVDs for this week, I will tell you about some video games I have been playing recently.  Just for a small change of pace and also because I wanted to mix things up a little bit.  Besides, if you are really that hard up for DVD releases, check out our buddy Hunter's column for the DVD releases at this place here.

I recently got a PS3 and I have been absolutely blown away by it.  I am most impressed by the visuals and whatnot.  Here's what's been taking up my time when I am not doing homework, watching movies, spending time with the family, doing the podcast, etc.

GOD OF WAR SERIES
Kratos, the disgraced former soldier for Ares has declared war on the God of War and later on Olympus itself!  I have played through most of the first game.  I remember it being a lot easier on the PS2.  The first one is brutal, violent, and frustratingly fun.  Likewise for part 2.  Part 3 I will not even crack open until I finished with the first two.  Why you ask?  It's just my crazy.  I am making it my goal to play through all three in order just because I can.  No other reason why. Highly recommended if you like your games, full of grisly violence and epically massive boss battles!

DC UNIVERSE ONLINE
I am currently taking a break from this one because it frustrating to me because it was just grind after grind.  Regardless, this is a fun, fun game.  The fact that as soon as I hit level 20 (which is not too hard to do) I immediately teamed up with the Green Lantern Corp. against the Sinestro Corp. was a great amount of fun. The missions are cool, the voice work for the most part is exemplary and the opening sequence is probably one of the coolest things you will ever see in a game ever. If you like your MMOs, then this one is great stuff.  And we have a team going on in the Redemption server.  Shoot me a note and I will give you more information on how to join!

UNCHARTED SERIES
Think Indiana Jones with more modern technology, no bullwhip, and more high scaling theatrics than you can shake a stick at!  These games are an awful lot of fun!  The graphics are gorgeous, the action is nonstop, and the story is one of the best in a video game.  The Uncharted series definitely should not be missed!  I am about half way through the first one and I am most impressed. I can't wait to try out part 2 and the upcoming part 3!

METAL GEAR SOLID 4
Oh, Metal Gear Solid 4, How do I love thee?  Let me count the ways.  The story is stellar especially if you have followed Snake's exploits throughout the series.  The graphics are incredible for an early PS3 game and the action is intense.  The tech you get to use in this one is a lot of fun as well and the Solid Eye gadget is way more than you think at first.  This game is beautiful, and detailed, and the boss fights are insane and surreal.  Definitely recommended if you are a fan of the series.

and out this week....
MORTAL KOMBAT

I must get my hands on this one.  I have heard good things.  I will pick it up soon and my thoughts on it will be out soon enough!
