The End of Splendor

It came to my attention that American Splendor creator/author Harvey Pekar had passed away today. I felt it was important to mark the passing of another notable in the world of comics.

Pekar began his autobiographic comics journey in 1976 under the aforementioned title and developed something of a cult following over the years. His work has been published by various publishers during his career. His life and the comic that chronicled many aspects therof were the focus of the 19.. movie American Splendor starring Paul Giamatti as Pekar.

After years of battling prostate cancer (the subject of his 1994 graphic novel Our Cancer Year), Mr. Pekar died at the age of 70. Harvey Pekar made a unique mark in this field and will live on through that work.

I remember meeting and talking with him at two different Dallas Fantasy Fairs. I also saw most ( if not all ) his appearances with Letterman. Interesting man. I was saddened to hear that he had passed away. Definitely one of a kind.
